I know this website is usually all about the music, but I recently tried making these blueberry-apple-cinnamon muffins and I LOVE them. So I thought I'd share the recipe. Muffins are gluten-free, dairy-free, low sugar and they actually taste really good! Recipe below ??

Ingredients (makes 12 muffins):

5 eggs

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/2 cup coconut flour

2 tablespoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup apples

1/2 cup blueberries

Coconut oil (regular butter is also an option) for greasing the muffin tins

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, grease muffin tins lightly with coconut oil (or butter if you prefer).

2. Whisk all the ingredients together in a large bowl, then let them settle for 5 minutes. Place 1/4 cup of batter in each muffin tin.

3. Bake until brown (11-15 mins) they should not be soft when lightly touched on top. Let them cool.

*can be frozen or refrigerated for breakfast/busy mornings

I was recently made aware of a nationwide prison strike in US (and now Canadian) prisons beginning August 21st and ending September 9th.

The strike, organized by Jailhouse Lawyers speak and Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (IWOC) has ten demands, among them access to rehabilitation, humane living conditions, sentencing reform and the end of modern day slavery. Incarcerated comrades have begun hunger strikes as well as sit-ins, commissary strikes and refusal of labor in an effort to draw attention to the demands.

In full, the demands are:

1. Immediate improvements to the conditions of prisons and prison policies that recognize the humanity of imprisoned men and women.
2. An immediate end to prison slavery. All persons imprisoned in any place of detention under United States jurisdiction must be paid the prevailing wage in their state or territory for their labor.
3. The Prison Litigation Reform Act must be rescinded, allowing imprisoned humans a proper channel to address grievances and violations of their rights.
4. The Truth in Sentencing Act and the Sentencing Reform Act must be rescinded so that imprisoned humans have a possibility of rehabilitation and parole. No human shall be sentenced to Death by Incarceration or serve any sentence without the possibility of parole.
5 .An immediate end to the racial overcharging, over-sentencing, and parole denials of Black and brown humans. Black humans shall no longer be denied parole because the victim of the crime was white, which is a particular problem in southern states.
6. An immediate end to racist gang enhancement laws targeting Black and brown humans.
7. No imprisoned human shall be denied access to rehabilitation programs at their place of detention because of their label as a violent offender.
8. State prisons must be funded specifically to offer more rehabilitation services.
9.Pell grants must be reinstated in all US states and territories.
10.The voting rights of all confined citizens serving prison sentences, pretrial detainees, and so-called “ex-felons” must be counted. Representation is demanded. All voices count.

In solidarity with the brave souls peacefully protesting, I have promised to play my Black Lives Matter song 'Rising Down' at every show through to September 9th.

WANT TO HELP?

There are more than 150 groups standing in solidarity with the prisoners. I will be posting more in the following days about how to get involved. For now, here are some links to pertinent organizations endorsing the strike:

I wanted to let you all know a little bit about what I’ve been up to. A new album is in the works. I’ve been writing up a storm and will be heading into the studio to record in May. But before all that, I also thought I’d let you know that I have a tour through the Midwest and beyond next week, as well as some upcoming summer dates. Stay tuned also for new festival announcements!.
Kaia Katertag:www.kaiakater.com,2005:Post/45282502016-12-28T12:58:32-05:002017-08-14T01:34:23-04:00I.
I have seen those parts of myself
Kicked rocks down into the wells where
bejeweled anger and bitterness
sit in bearskin coats, rotting together
maybe like veal gone bad or -
some old priest with gangrene

One red bird coasting through the air
and who should stand below with a shotgun -
but the Queen
and her dogs.
Kaia Katertag:www.kaiakater.com,2005:Post/44970402016-11-29T12:20:00-05:002018-03-08T10:40:21-05:00Thank you Uncut magazine for featuring Nine Pin!Kaia Katertag:www.kaiakater.com,2005:Post/44497312016-11-02T23:38:01-04:002016-11-02T23:38:01-04:00THANK YOU Credits for 'Nine Pin'!As the 'Nine Pin' record reaches its six month anniversary, I'd like to publicly thank some PledgeMusic backers who helped the record come to life:

Martin Nuttall at LITTLEgiants music
Anne Louise Genest
Mark Sustic
Sue & Rich Hanson
Carter Smith
Scott Tichenor
Paul Mischler

YOU ARE ALL AMAZING! Instead of talking about the weather, we talked about Dylan. I was surprised that he'd won, due to the nature of the award. We assured each other that it was (probably?) a Momentous Time in History.

I grew up with Dylan's music, as many generation X, Y and Z kids did. He represented a time, a Greenwich Village era of free love and protest. In grade 7, our middle school English teacher assigned 'Positively 4th Street' to us as a framework from which to explore the negative effects of bullying. I listened to it, I wrote my response. Though well meaning, the assignment was formulaic. Ascribe meaning to a song, have students respond. 33 copies of the same paragraph.

I went home and listened to The Fugees. I liked Lauryn Hill and memorized all her raps. I listened to The Roots' 'Illadelph Halflife', Common's 'Be' and Kweli and Def's 'Blackstar'. I got to know Philadelphia, Chicago and Bed Stuy through those records. The albums were kaleidoscopes, secret entrances to the cities they loved.

I visited Philly, New York and Chicago—all for the first time—this Fall. Experiencing them for the first time was like meeting someone you've already had conversations with in your dreams. Oddly familiar, yet new.

Bob Dylan was peppered into my youth, but he wasn't the main channel. If I could name older generations whose music I latched onto, I'd choose Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Pete Seeger. The list goes on, but Dylan is likely at the end of it.

Being a folk musician today is compelling for many reasons. There's so much to fight for, songs that need to be and should be written. There's poetry to make, people to listen to and be inspired by. Movements to join, politicians to protest and governments to dissolve.

Dylan's recognition is Great. It is a Momentous Time in History. My hope is that Dylan does not become a catch-all for songwriters in the eyes of the global community. For all his international glory, Dylan is a small link in the long chain of American folk music, and before that, Scots-Irish, Native and West African music.

Some Buddhist philosophies assert that all living creatures are waves that exist for just a moment on the surface of the water, until we return to the proverbial sea from whence we came. In Dylan's case, that sea is African-American blues, jazz, and stringband music. It's Elizabeth Cotten and Jean Ritchie and Bessie Jones. It's Gil Scott-Heron. It's Jill Scott, his daughter. It's James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Louise Erdrich, Charles Eastman, Toni Morrison and Ta-Nehisi Coates. It's many conflicting, turbulent concepts that push the younger generations along in both literature and song.

Academies decide lots of Things. Who deserves what, and who did what to deserve what. Academies are okay I guess. They make Decisions about Greatness which spark Momentous Times in History.

But do we really need an academy to ascribe value to someone whose value has already been ascribed? Is Dylan more of a King of literature than Tupac? Tupac moreso than Alice Walker?

I like Momentous Times in History as much as any other person, but there needs to be an understanding of who and what we are recognizing, and why. I celebrate Dylan for Dylan. He is less the face of a movement and more a tile in a changing mosaic.

If we can recognize that awards do not pave the golden path to immortality, then we can give each other far more meaning than Academies ever can.

As Dylan himself sang:

"The order is rapidly fadin'
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a' changin'!"
Kaia Katertag:www.kaiakater.com,2005:Post/41793162016-05-13T10:02:07-04:002017-11-10T04:03:32-05:00Nine Pin Released in North AmericaToday is the day! It was incredible to see the talent coming out of West Virginia. I met and heard young, vibrant, amazing people from almost every county in the state. This summer has been spent with a pen in hand and a lot of song ideas have come from my time back in Toronto. I returned to school in August, and have been working on an official tour for the release of Sorrow Bound, to take me through Ottawa, Montreal, Wakefield QC and beyond. Please stay tuned for dates, to be announced in November! It will be an exciting tour full of songs from the record, and some fresh from their incubation in the summer.

Many friends have asked me what life is like in Appalachia versus Canada. I see as many similarities as I see differences. Both have rich cultures with extremely friendly people. West Virginia has been a place of learning and growth for me. I moved here ten days before my nineteenth birthday. I remember sitting at a picnic table in front of my dorm staring blankly at the sun and wondering if I was crazy to do this. The Appalachian music program was just starting, and I felt both excitement and fear. I'd moved from a bustling city to a rural town, with no idea what was in store next. I didn't even have a major picked out. It was just my banjo and I in a tiny college town in the Appalachians.

Looking back a full two years later, I can say that West Virginia has changed me. I've studied with some of the best cloggers in the country, and had the chance to learn how to sing harmony and play as a member of a band. The hardest and, dialectically, the most rewarding part for me has been the vulnerability I've felt in my growth as an musician. In rehearsal we are challenged to reveal the weakest parts of ourselves (whether it be singing, improvising, or keeping rhythm) and submit them for improvement. Trying, and failing, has been difficult. But trying again and succeeding is an incredible feeling, especially onstage. During a gig in Marlinton WV, we sang a ballad that was from Pocahontas County, where Marlinton is located. In the second row of the audience, I spied a daughter, mother and grandmother all holding hands listening to the ballad. Three generations of women whose tradition I was singing back to them. At that point I felt the weight and meaning of what I was doing.

Dancer and singer Eileen Carson Schatz of the Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble once told me that the stage is sacred. Hours and hours of practice, or toil and struggle, lead up to this point where magic can happen. Especially in traditional music, we dance and play the history of our ancestors. Often, it's a bloody history whose music marks a brief respite from that trouble. Sometimes songs are a heartbroken expression of this trouble. In old-time music, we're merging West African roots with Irish, Scottish and English branches. When we perform this history onstage, it is an honour that should be taken seriously—a challenge that we should raise ourselves up to. As I've thought about how to hone my stagecraft as a solo artist, I've come back to this quite frequently. When I am performing tradition—especially tradition that isn't historically my own—I have a responsibility to express it as fully and honestly as I can onstage. I think those moments between the crevices and the climaxes of songs is where the audience and the artist connect. If I can make my stagecraft have as many of those moments as possible, then I think I can live a happy and fulfilled life presenting the traditions I love.

The conversation around the presentation tradition is ongoing, and I'd like to do my part to keep it alive. From here on, I'll be positing blogs from the road as well as discussions around tradition in the modern age. As always, I'll keep exploring traditions and forming my own 'rogue' path. Keep checking back!Kaia Kater
